Incredible Festival of Theatre coming to Ipswich

The Ipswich Civic Centre theatre program will be further developed under the 2011-2012 Ipswich City Council Budget.

Arts, Community and Cultural Community Services Committee Chairperson Councillor Charlie Pisasale said the program would be expanded to incorporate specific initiatives for young people.

"One of the main objectives is to boost the variety of local entertainment available for youths, as well as encourage school children to take an active interest in the arts by providing teacher/education kits and tours," Cr Pisasale said.

"The arts play a vital role in our community and since its launch in 2004, the theatre program has become a major success story for Ipswich City Council and the Ipswich Civic Centre.

"More and more acts request to be included, as evidenced by the stellar line-up of performers that will grace the stage during the program's upcoming July to December season."

Cr Pisasale said the Civic Centre was well-positioned to cater for the expansion following a $1.5 million refit earlier this year.

Renovations included the installation of a lift plus a major refurbishment to dressing rooms, front of house facilities and function rooms.

"The city is extremely fortunate to have a theatre that attracts events and acts of such high calibre and acclaim," he said.

"The recent upgrades have bolstered the Civic Centre's already outstanding reputation as one of the region's leading event and function venues."
